There was something different in the game between Portage Central and Okemos. The teams had played in the past, but with both teams now members of the South Central High School Hockey League, this was the first time the teams met as conference opponents.
The game was played fairly evenly throughout. Okemos scored first, a few minutes into the first period.
Portage Central was able to tie the game a few minutes later. Justin Hayward cleared the puck out of the defensive zone to center ice where Ryan Jaros picked up the past and skated in 1:1. Beckett Saline joined the rush to make it a 2 on 1 and once Jaros drew the defenceman to him, he slide the puck over to Saline who fired it past the Saline goaltender to even the game.
The Mustangs pulled ahead 2-1 on a great goal on the rush. Filip Hendl caused a turnover in the defensive zone and pushed the puck up the ice, passing it to Beckett Saline. Saline and Hunter Maschke entered the Okemos zone 2 on 2. As Saline slowed a little, Maschke drove the net and Saline feather a pass through 2 Okemos players to Maschke who was being hauled down by the defenseman covering him. Maschke was able to tip the puck on the net and past the goaltender, giving the Mustangs a 2-1 lead.
The lead was short lived as Okemos scored 2 minutes later to tie the game back up at 2. The game would remain tied until PC took a tripping penalty with 3:33 left in the game. Okemos was able to score on the powerplay and then hold off PCs late game heroics to scratch out a 3-2 victory over the Mustangs.
Portage Central was outshot by Okemos 22-17. PC goalie Bryan Gracey finished with 19 saves on 22 shots.
