Big Third Period Powers Win

Portage Central traveled to Jackson, MI to take on the Jackson United Hockey Team. Jackson United is made up of players from Jackson, Northwest, Michigan Center, and Western High Schools.

Jackson United scored first when the Mustangs pinched in the offensive zone and gave up a breakaway, which Jackson converted for the 1-0 lead.

The Mustangs picked their game up another notch and that pressure netted a goal a few minutes later. Joe Dana passed the puck out to Filip Hendl at the point, who lofted the puck on net. Colin Hauer battled in front of the net and was able to tip Hendl's shot past the goaltender and tie the game at 1.

The Mustangs kept the offensive pressure on. After a few more scoring chances, it looked like United was going to be able to clear the puck out of the zone, but Justin Hayward jumped in front of a clearing pass and unleashed his cannon of a slapshot and blew the puck past the stunned Jackson goaltender for a 2-1 lead.

The Mustangs held the 2-1 lead for most of the period despite peppering the United goaltender. Jackson was able to tie the game on a fluky, lucky goal. Jackson fired a puck at the net, but it was partially block by a Mustang defender. The puck fluttered just over the goaltender's shoulder and just under the bar to tied the game at 2.

The Mustangs took control in the third period. Ryan Jaros started the goal parade with a powerplay snipe, assisted by Maschke and Will Anderson.

Maschke scored next for his first goal of the game. Rocco Seals was at the point and made a hard pass to Jaros, who one-timed the puck toward the far side of the net. As Maschke skated toward the back of the crease, he was able to deflect Jaros' pass into the net for an amazing tic-tac-goal!

Maschke scored his second of the night on the power play. Jaros passed the puck to Maschke as he cycled in the corner of the offensive zone. Jaros was knocked to the ground by a defender, but that allowed Maschke to wheel around the bodies on the ice and snap a puck from the faceoff circle into the top corner of the net for the Mustangs 5th goal.

Maschke finished the hat-trick a few minutes later. Ryan Osinski fired a puck on net from the point. Beckett Saline knocked down the shot and Maschke grabbed the loose puck and buried it behind the goalie for the Mustangs.

Portage Central goalie Zach Hufford stopped 25 of 27 shots for the win.
