On a snowy Wednesday evening, PC played host to last year’s league champions Mattawan. Things got off to the rough start for the Mustangs in the first period as they started a game-long trend of giving the Wildcats power plays of which they were more than capable of taking advantage. Mattawan tallied two power play goals, plus one even strength goal, while PC tried in vain to find the back of the net on several good scoring chances. The score stood 3-0 for Mattawan after the first period.
Things stabilized for PC in the second period. Their penalty killing skills stepped up as the trend of being short-handed continued. Canyon Morse scored his first goal of the season after he snuck the puck under the goalie’s pads to make it 3-1. Both squads went toe-to-toe beyond that until Mattawan succeeded on another power play with 36 seconds left in the period to take their lead back to three goals at 4-1.
Penalties and physical play became the standard in the third period for both teams. Mattawan scored a fourth power play goal after PC had killed most of a 5-on-3 situation, and then added a sixth goal late in the game as the result of a 2-on-1 breakaway while the teams played 4 on 4.
Final scores Mattawan 6, PC 1.
This weekend PC travels to Hudsonville to play in the Jenison Tournament, and will return home Wednesday evening at 5:30 to play the Kalamazoo Eagles.
