For the 2nd time within a week, Portage Central downed Portage Northern. But instead of playing in the normal confines of Wings West, this time it was in the championship game of the Jenison Tournament at Georgetown Ice Arena.
In the first period, PC tallied a power play goal from Max Mones and then later at even strength from Jared Sorenson. The Mustangs held a 2-0 lead after the first period. It seemed like deja vu from The Portage Classic when Nothern came roaring back in the 2nd with 3 straight goals, the first of which was moments after PC completed a penalty kill. Luckily, Sorenson scored again in the last minute of the 2nd period to tie it at 3-3.
The lone goal in the 3rd was another highlight goal by Max Mones. Final PC 4, PN 3.
It was a great game from both teams. Parents from both sides agreed it was a better game than the Classic as the players seemed much more at ease.
Next game for PC is Wednesday the 21st against the Kalamazoo Eagles at 5:30 PM at Wings West.
