The Portage Central Mustangs traveled to Griff’s Georgetown Ice Arena to take on the Hudsonville Eagles in a non-league contest. The Eagles held a military appreciation night as well, as each player was introduced with a
The Mustangs jumped into the lead just eighty-nine seconds into the game. Hunter Maschke took possession of the puck in the offensive zone and ringed it around the ice to his Luke Sproule on the other side of the zone. Sproule grabbed the puck, dished it to Ryan Jaros and then headed to the net. Jaros took the pass and gave it right back to Sproule who fired the puck shortside and into the back of the net!
The Mustangs scored again in the first period, this time on a shorthanded goal. The Mustangs were a man down due to an elbowing penalty, but doing a great job of pressuring the puck and throwing it back down the ice. As the Eagles were trying to break out of their zone, Konnor McLeod cut one of the Eagle breakout passes near the wall and chipped it up to Canyon Morse skating through center ice. Morse grabbed the puck out of the air and dropped it to his stick as he entered the offensive zone on a breakaway. Morse accelerated towards the net, faked a move to the left which froze the goalie, then stepped to the right and backhanded the puck into the wide open net for the two goal lead.
Hudsonville continued to fight all game long and had a number of scoring chances, but Mustang goaltender Bryan Gracey and the Mustang defense played. The Eagles were able to sneak a powerplay goal past Gracey in the second period, but that was it. Gracey finished the game with 33 saves on 34 shots. The Mustangs were able to score their 2 goals on 25 shots.
